Southern California has mostly avoided heartworm because of the dry weather conditions. But a change in weather patterns has created a surge in population of the rare Western Tree Hole mosquitoes, which has been known to carry the heartworm parasite. Heartworm can be fatal in dogs and cats. For this reason, it is recommended by all of our doctors that dogs get a yearly blood test to check for heartworm along with their annual updates.
